The x300 and the 9600 are the same cards.

The only differance is in the Manufacturing Process:

X300 Manufactured in 0.11 micron ths for being a PCI-E card.
9600 Manufactured in 0.13 micron ths for being a AGP card.

X300 is using RV370 (Architecture) chip.
9600 is using RV350/RV360 (Architecture) chip.

That means, not much.

Search for some X300 reviews or benchmarks.
As for the 9600 is a good card. (IF you OC it)

You better look here.

What I will be stating is that if you are moving to the new Intel LGA775 specification or the new Athlon64 PCI Express motherboard and you just need a basic 2D videocard, the X300 based alternatives on the market will make you more than happy. If you are even considering gaming, do yourself a favor and upgrade to an X600 if you want some decent playable..
@Knut both cards (X300 & 9600) >(NOT se/xt/pro) has 128-bit. (MBW)

Over all i think the 9600 is better, although you may find a good version of the X300 around as well. (doubt it)

BTW, the x300 came to replace the 9200
