But if you carry out that line of thinking (and Monkey's) to the extreme, then there isn't anything wrong with hardcore porn on prime time TV. I mean, if you don't want to see it, just change the channel right?
In the US, the airwaves belong to the public. The FCC exists to enforce the public will on the airwaves they own. If the majority of those owners don't want a certain type of programming, then it is up to the FCC to enforce that will. Of course, the trick is figuring out just what the public will is.
Note that the FCC has no jurisdiction over things such as CDs, and those organizations that enforce ratings on those things are largely voluntary (and market driven).
As I said before, US politicians spouting off about the evils of this or that are nothing more than the political animal seeking publicity in the face of an election campaign, and has nothing to do with reality. If a politician decides that they will gain votes and publicity by introducing legislation to outlaw petting a dog in public, then you can bet they will carry on about it as if the earth's very existence depends on the outcome.
