Hey now,
I have always ignored celeron & non-desktop processors, but am looking to get my kid into a laptop with at least better performance than his current 2 ghz athlon (32 bit). Price, heat, and battery life point to the pentium m series, but I have also been advised that the m series 2 ghz chip will outperform a p4 up to 3.4 ghz for gaming. Is that right?

As a follow up, will geforce 6600 graphics outperform radeon 9800 pro?

Thanks!!
#1 Yes, this is right. The current Pentium M series with 1.83 - 2.12 ghz perform equal or slightly better than a Pentium 4 with 3ghz. You will be set with such a processor for the next 1-2 years minimum, maybe even more, depends on the games though.

#2 A GeForce 6600 (non gt) will not outperform a 9800 Pro, the ATi card will do slightly better. A GeForce 6600 GT though will perform equal as the 9800 Pro over time. As Silent Archer said, sometimes the nVidia card is better in a game (Doom 3 comes to mind) someone is the Radeon card better. I would nod suggest an "upgrade" in this case.
