If anybody here's a scientific type that isn't scared away by excessive gore (but, seriously, you guys are GAMERS...gore should be no trouble :P ), an absolutely fantastic read is The Cobra Event by Richard Preston. This book is the best I have ever read. It details a man engineering a strain of the smallpox virus to be much more deadly and gruesome than its native strain, then attempting to unleash this on New York. The book is very tense and intense, but just as interesting is the backstory--Preston knows a great deal about these viral weapons, and he shows it off well. He gives so much background detail and evidence of existing operations that it makes the reader come to the realization that this really could happen, any day. This information is very detailed, yet very accessible. The book is definitely not a light read, but it is more fiction than nonfiction, and is an immensely satisfying read that I wholeheartedly reccomend to anybody who can handle the gore.
(Gore example--a man takes a large surgical saw and uses it to hack his assistant's head off...then uses the knife to peel off his own scalp and EAT it. As I said, not for the faint of heart.)

Other good reads:
Heart of Darkness: The classic Joseph Conrad book, which I found stunning in its excellent description (excellent isn't even the right term; the flowing language of Conrad is unsurpassed) and, while it drags a bit at times, when everything comes together, it shows itself to be a truly amazing read.
The Donor: A Frank M. Robinson book that was, while not amazing, certainly satisfying. It is fairly tense and very simple...not too much brainpower required for this one...but is pretty good overall.
