I assume you already have directx 9.0C on your system and other drivers like tose of your soundcard are all pretty much up to date. Since you mention some error about shaders then it mgiht be your graphicscard not supporting shadermodel 2.0 which is the absolute minimum of the gamerequirements.

Please tell us what type of videocard you currently own and don't forget to try the 1.4 beta patch to see wheter that one works located here
