Whilst it is true SONY have reported losses, their World-Wide catalogue enables them to do so. All console manufacturers make a loss on Hardware sales for the first 2 years, going back as far as the 8-bit era, where game sales and licenses helped claw back the hardware vendors initial investment.
However, I think this time around, SONY are going to have more of a battle on their hands, with Nintendo actually clawing back some of their share of the console market and M$ taking a fair few percentage points themselves. SONY 50%, Nintendo 20% and M$ 30% would seem about right to me.
