Holy crap, I knew people still play the full game but the demo? Get the full game m8, it's available around 5 Euro's/dollars everywhere and has tons of patches so gameplay goes smoother.

To answer your question, game probably frooze on you. Pretty common with old computers when their memory is too full and the processor has to many jobs to do at that time.
