I'm wondering if that wasn't the motivation for MS letting them go their own way. MS owned 100% of Bungie, and apparently sold back 51% to someone (I guess Bungie's prez?)
I can't imagine that the Bungie team could have passed the hat and found enough money to tempt M$ with a buyout, so M$ must figure that they will do better financially with the games that Bungie will produce then with a big risk-adverse bureaucracy making them justify every potential project. (Not to mention that M$ still will get 49% of the profit)
