Yes Ubuntu is a nice distro indeed. It is tailored for noobs, so its really quite easy to install. Out of the box Ubuntu is a good all round solution, but it lacks customisation on install that other major distros rely on.

I use SUSE Linux x64, which is one of the top distros for people who used linux pre-ubuntu/knoppix/LiveCd era.
