Hey, guys, do you want to link stories as Avar333 and Slinky2397 suggested?... Here's a little something to get this started. Hope you like SF.
All was quiet on the SHOOTING STAR - the Galactic Empire's newest experimental jump-ship. John Morgan - the pilot - was sound asleep in his cryogenic bath waiting for the ship to end its pre-programmed series of hyperjumps.
The SHOOTING STAR was the first ship to ever aim at another galaxy - a goal, untill recently, presumed imposible. It was the fuel that posed the greatest problem. Ships could simply not carry enough to cover the unthinkable gap between two galaxies. Every additional pound of weight took energy to be accelerated beyond the speed of light... It was an exponential function, so there was a point beyond which adding fuel had no effect or even had negative effect on the jump distance.
The invention of jumpgates over a century ago had a great effect on star travel. The starting gate catapulted ships and the receiver gate pulled them through hyperspace so ship fuel was not an issue when travelling on established trade routes... There was one drawback though - someone had to go and establish a gate in the desired location. And other galaxies were just too far away.
A breakthrough in High Energy Science Center two years ago changed all that. Those smartasses there had come up with a new mysterious energy source somewhat a million times more eficient than standart jumpship fuel. How they had done it noone knew - they screwed up and and a whole planet went nova. It took two years to scrape up about 200 pounds of this material called infernium from the remains. More than enough to jet a ship loaded with a foothold jumpgate to the nearest galaxy. This ship was the SHOOTING STAR.

Alarms sounded as the ship was forced out of hyperspace caught by a warp disruptor net two jumps from the edge of the galaxy. Escort ships were too far away to receive the distress signal but Bioautomat I sent it anyway then started the emergency sequence to defreeze Morgan - combat situations demanded human presence. Emergency defreezind was almost complete when the attack came. Bioautomat I raised the shields and powered up the antimeteor gun (AMG). This was bad. The SHOOTING STAR was no battleship.
The first torpedo hit on the shields...
