If the game is 'really old' try an older Direct X driver like 7.0. 9.0 is for new high-technology games.
If that doesn't work, try it on a slightly older OS (W95) with the above, at a low resolution (640x480/800x600). If you go through this much trouble, I hope this is one helluva game on you're part
