the only reason there's a slight bit of competition between the consoles is that retail xboxes don't use half of their potential. all of my mates were complete ps2 lovers and hated the xbox, since i showed them all my xbox w/ a modchip... all of them regret getting a ps2, and quite a few of my friends are even getting rid of their ps2's and saving up for an xbox.
