According to John Carmack (Developer of Doom) the minimum requirements for Doom 3 will be:
1.0 Ghz Athlon/Pentium 4 CPU.
256MB of RAM
GeForce 1 / Radeon 7xxx series graphics card.
(This will of course affect dynamic lighting dramatically, you'll only get about 30 fps maximum on 640x480 (that terrible!!))
Recommended Requirements:
1.8 Ghz Athlon / Pentium 4 or higher speed CPU.
512MB of RAM + again quite dependant on how memory hungry your OS is.
GeForce 3 / Radeon 9xxx Series Graphics Cards.
Current (June/July 2003 and beyond) high-end systems should be kicking ass:
Athlon XP 3200+ 3.06Ghz Pentium 4 (with HT technology)
512MB of RAM+
Radeon 9800 XT or GeForce 5950 Ultra
In my opinion The True Requirements will be:
Athlon XP 2800+ / 2.5 Ghz Pentium 4 (To handle the lighting and Physics calculations)
512MB Ram+
Windows 2000/Xp Only (95/98/Me Not Supported)
GeForce 6800 Ultra 256 Mb / Radeon X800 Xt Platinum Edition (256Mb) (Both ship mid June/2004)
Doom itself will at the earliest ship 7/26/04 and according to Carmack they may finish testing by the end of August early September. I think that Doom may be out maybe out by the latest Christmas,2004. Id. Software said that they don't want to rush the completion of the Doom 3 engine as it is titled. Do to it being a new engine being built from the ground up, it mostly focuses on the High-Fidelity resolution in the shadows and textures.
All I can say is that I've waited 10 years i can try and wait another 3 -4 months. Doom 3 has been it development since Nov. 99 according to id.
Hopefully this is enough info to ease your mind and have some patience.
