@interman: I tried Googling already - and I consider myself pretty good at finding stuff on the Net. Unfortunatelly DOS apps aren't described well anymore, besides - if ScreenThief crashed (and it was considered the best at that time) ..then Googling really may not help. :/

Infraview did not return anything sensible - it rather suggests Irfanview which is viewing app (that I use BTW). I forgot that it has capturing capabilities, but I really doubt if it will work. Of course I will try anyway
Game cam is just now downloaded (v1.2 is the newest I've found), but the description suggests that it's mainly DirectX/OpenGL - i doubt if it will capture DOS screens, but I will give it a try, too...
The bottom line is (again): how those hi-res pictures on Gamershell were actually captured?
