New Ubuntu release tomorrow

The new Ubuntu version, Intrepid Ibex (version 8.10) will be released tomorrow (30 october).
Even the newest Radeon series graphics cards will be supported out-of-the-box, and it is said we can expect some other changes as well.

In my case only on my Intel, my laptop is fine with the latest long-term support version. So is my good old Compaq, with quite a lot of installed software and savegames and maps of "The Battle for Wesnoth". And let's not forget the little customisations I did with the GUI. So I don't think it is worth all the effort to reinstall Ubuntu on that pcs (upgrading via the update manager is not recommended due to possible compatibillity issues with some settings).

I just got the new Mandriva Linux powerpack 2009 and see no need to switch since it rocks. I am curious to hear your opinions after using it for a bit though.

I never tried Mandriva, but I can imagine that you don't have a reason to switch to Ubuntu and that Mandriva 2009 rocks. It is one of the "A-titles" and longer-existing than Ubuntu. But as I stated before in this thread, Ubuntu is "moving forward" and that is a good thing of course.

I just read a 6 page piece on it on Tweakers.net (Dutch only). Ubuntu is great, but I have been kicking it with Mandriva since day one of my Linux life. Grown accustomed to it and all.

I installed it this afternoon. The new Darkroom theme looks promising, though at some points I need to customise it a bit to fulfill my wishes a bit better. At least the customisation possibillities seemed to have been improved.

Hey guys, i have a question maybe you can help me out easy, or someone maybe may have had the same problem.

Today i got curious and installed Ubuntu with the Wubi tool, all went nice and stuff.

But the only thing that bothers me is that my mouse seems to behave weird, every 2 seconds it points to the same spot on the screen, so every time i want to click something, the pointer is gone again :S

I,ve googled abit, but theyre only talking in nasa language, and for a linux noob like me that,s not understandable ^^

I thought i drop it here since its about 8.10, and who knows someone has an easy explanation.

If not, ill keep looking ^^

I loved it it installed fast and recognized all my hardware, but the click thing is making me nervous not to use it :D

when googling, better use your country, ubuntu and forum as keywords. Odds are large that you will find a "local" forum then. Ubuntu has a great community that really is helping out fine (in my experience). Also are they usually having documentation for beginning users.

Anyway, I suppose your G3 has a button to decrease the amount of dpi? Put that on the lowest mode first (if you can), and then go to [system] --> [preferences] --> [mouse]. There you should adjust the sensitivity and speed of the mouse. Just try to find the settings that are the most comfortable for you. At least, I think that the oversensitivity of G-series mice in Ubuntu is causing the problem.

Edit:i read this somewhere in a forum, didnt try it yet an dont know if its linked to my current problem too...

in ubuntu 5.04 i had this problems too.
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf i changed the next things:

protocol 'microsoft'
device '/dev/ttySO'

And that solved his problem with a mouse that acted weird, ill try the button first, and then if not work find out where to change that :D

in /etc/X11/xorg.conf i changed the next things:

device '/dev/ttySO'

Better not compare recent Ubuntu versions with 5.04, which is years old. xorg.conf is a file from Xorg, the Window Manager Ubuntu uses. And afaik have their been some changes within the Xorg project (Xorg is apart from ubuntu, just like the Gnome interface).
And you need to give the text-editor Gedit rootpowers, before you can use it to change that configuration file.

I think it is better to become a member of an ubuntu forum, to let you be guided through. :)

Hey, for some unexplained reason it works sometimes now :S
Booted to buntu last night, and i was surprised it wasnt glitching.
I was like DAMN GREAT??
Browsing the web abit, used some pidgin, and BOOM there it started again...
Started glitching a little, and after 5 minutes i could barely restart my pc with the restart button.....

Yes, i tried the DPI button, and set it to lower sens in settings, no help.

Thanks for your time guys, i think ill leave it for this one since it was same with my last ubuntu install long time ago...(if that glitch still lives wtf)

In ubuntu, you cannot login and stay "admin". And using sudo is what I meant with giving root powers. "su"in sudo stands for superuser, say, the equivalent to an adminaccount in Win. It is part of the security measures to let users loose their admin rights until they give their password again.
