Interesting topic..

Tomshardware.com has a good article about playing windows games in linux. To make a long story short; it works, but the performence is crappy. You can read about it at http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/02q2/020531/index.html

The problem about reviewing linux games is that most of the games that have been ported are fairly old, so it makes it difficult to compare a give scores that are fair. Luckily more and more new games are being ported to linux, so it would be a possibility in the future..

We want to support linux gaming, as you might've noticed from us hosting linux servers etc. One idea would be to have guides to setting up for instance a UT2003 server etc, where we could comment on what could be improved etc.

Oki...

UT2003 have gone gold and are shipped with Linux support...
(server)
Soon will also the game come as a Linux version...
(still working on that)
Will come back with link on that....

Hmmmz, is that an old game???

Don think so....

I think that it is great that one company dev. a brand new game and direct-out-of-box have Linux support and it is even better when the name is UT2003... alot of hype around it...
have no clue why... byt anyway...
This will make a very good start for me (Linux newbie) and others that have put the WinXP cd in the trash...

What the we gamers need to do is to support the gamers with
report bug etc. otherwise I think Linux Gameing will be just like it have for MacOS. There is games for MacOS but as you said a few years old...

Well, i did say "Luckily more and more new games are being ported to linux, so it would be a possibility in the future..". Regardless, since I will be reviewing UT2003 as soon as it goes public I'll do so on the platform where I can get it first. Most likely that'll be on windows, but it could be interesting to have a performence comparison in UT2003 between windows and linux.

Stabbe, you think it crap just cuz you don understand it...
(Just like me)

LOL

It would be very cool if you make the review on a Linux machine with Transgamings WinX 2.1.1 or something like that...

Yeaa, yeaa I know that the FPS will go down from about 120 to 80 or lower... Just some tweaking and then you will be up and running with even the same FPS as the windows system.
Ooh, and one more thing...
It would be really funny if too see if the Linux machine with WinX installed with UT2003 is just as stabel as the Windows system with UT2003...
if Not... just write it...
It will come...

Quake III Arena is out of box already for Linux and Windows so there are pretty good games out there already for Linux..

Why not do a review on gaming vs Linux with diffrent "emulators" like Win4Lin, WMware, WineX
It would be really cool to read that review....

the issue is that installing these system is not as easy as regual windows (even if then they will not crash in the middle of a chat session...), and then before getting a game to run at full speed you have to optimize everything, probably to learn some scripting, they're great for the average nerd, though the average player barely can install a patch.

The review about one of the systems is a good idea, we'll see if anyone wanna try doing one, altough with christmas rush incoming we'll barely have a free reviewer http://www.gamershell.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Gaming UT2003 on a Mandrake 9.0rc3 with a GF2mx400, without
any problem. The machine is a XP 1700+/256Mb DDR/40Gb 7200 rpm. Only think you need to to is to get the drivers
from nvidas site, and it take less than 3 minutes to fix
it and restart X (not restart the machine)

My ping is under 10ms to nearest server. (100mbit to work http://www.gamershell.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif)

i must add at this point, that, as much as i've heard(read), there are only working drivers for ut2k3 from nvidia (closed source), but people are already working on the ati driver (its a big aim to get it working for ati, especially cause i have one). think it was something with textures, that is not working

This is really great news to hear...
At least 2 of the biggest graphiccard designers are working on this....
I think that UT2003 actually can make a break throu in the Linux world and make it to a pretty good gaming platform..
It´s not that great too hear that 10 or 100Mbit to get it smooth... poor Cable users =((
Anyway, I will have my 10Mbit soon....

this is the issue, games will not run out of the box, whilst mostly they should for windows (then they will crash in the very middle... but that's another story).

anyway like madtrax says, tcp/ip stack for linux is highly optimized making a perfect target for online gaming.

Linux have alot that windows don´t..
You have more control of everything and can optimize your computer more with Linux..
This means that if The gaming community pushes a little bit harder on the developers and request "out-of-box" linux ported games. There will be a huge amount off linux machines instead of Windows. I don´t say that 5 miljone people will give up Windows and grab the Linux OS but I think that the Linux World need something new.
Thats where the game-community like GH3d can help us out. As a "little-deadly-human" I can send e-mail to the developers and request but nothing will be done by them. If all the gamers at GH3d and alot more gaming sites come toghter and ask for it I don´t think the developers can say no, cuz most people that have a little bit of a brain can learn Linux, (yes, linux must be more user-friendly) but remember that if one shout out no one will hear him but if 100´000 people shout the same as the lonly poor bastard did they will hear us out and ask what we want.
I think that Linux can be one of the best gaming platform ever if we just give it a try and all come toghter and ask.

Is it wrong..?
