Most of the properties I ve handled didnt have roaches, but its way easier to rid them before its occupied. The approaches differ whether its multi family or single family dwelling.

The most effective methods would likely sicken a pet if you could not be gone for like a week.

My wife and I moved into an apartment that had no roaches and about a year later some migrants moved below us and weeks later began to see roaches once a week or so. We made sure our floors were bleached, killed every one we saw, and kept ALL food items sealed and refrigerated even the cat had feeding times and the food was picked up after every meal. Eventually we didnt see any for a long time. I think they make trails in the walls to the dirtiest apartments and infest those. Dont even leave a cup of water in the sink. Once I came into a vacant unit and they had infested the dishwasher for f**ks sake. People were filthy and never used the thing. Sprinkle borax wherever you see them. Its fairly non toxic. Remember, remove any food source and they will find greener pastures. I know, I know, they will eat plastic. But they do prefer bread crumbs, cereal, grease, blood, etc and will leave you alone if all they get is a whiff of bleach and borax. Clean under your stove and the sides of your stove they can live for months just on the drips down the sides of some ranges Ive seen..They also like to nest under refer's around the compressor, so make sure thats clean and splash some pine-sol around the coils. Finally if you sprinkle some borax around the areas you think they are coming in and you see it disturbed, seal up the gaps with caulk, expanding foam, or joint compound. Often they will follow plumbing and wiring runs so check under your sinks and make sure your outlets are as tight as they can be. I watched one squeeze out a gap around an outlet about 1mm or less..Please send my consultation fee to GH server fund....
