View Full Version : Half Life 2: Performance Boost on NVIDIA

Remember when Valve was writing this game exclusively for ATI hardware? Or basically design the game around ATI hardware? Well someone has found a way to radically boost frame rates on NVIDIA hardware without image quality loss. Want to see how he done it? Below is a snip:

Again, using 3dAnalyze you can test this. It is capable of forcing a card to use only FP16 shaders no matter what is requested. You'll see no image quality difference doing that - just a HUGE performance boost. Why? Well, because while FP16 is all that Half-Life 2 *needs*, if they let the GeForce FX cards do THAT, they might have been competitive! So, instead, they forced FP24 (unneeded), which caused the GF-FX cards to render the DX9 mode in FP32 all the time. With the obvious associated performance hit.

well duh thats exactly what nvidia do to heaps of games HL2 is one of the very few games ATI have made bias towards their cards nearly every game on the market is biased towards nvidia cards

In the article (more than 20 pages, and Ihaven´t read more than maybe the first two)
it is said that 3DAnalyze isn´t stable enough to play the whole game throu with it,
it´s only possible to test a few scenes as far as I understood and seems not to work
with the 6800 (man those have enough power already), but I´m not totally sure, but
it seems more pointed at the 5XXX FXGeforce Cards.

;)

I think both companies use dirty little tricks to promote their cards in "their" games and in the benchmarks.

Anyways we should as gamer be lucky we have a graphic cards competition, because the more competition the better and faster the inventions for the graphics sector. The better the games look...

but if you campare how many games titles nvidia has it's logo stamped on it campared to how many games ATI has their logo stamped on a game you'll see that nvidia has alot more of their crap stamped on games

Just because NVIDIA has there name on the box dosnt mean the game is made to favor there cards. Look at Vampire The Masquerade : Bloodlines, It has Nvidia on the box and even has the "Way it's ment to be played" splash screen And as we all know VM:B uses the source engine.
Yes, good point!
