View Full Version : Simple vid card question!

Ive been on these forums several times about video cards but many things have happend with me and PCs since, so I am coming back for more advice.
I currently have a Geforce 4 MX and a copy of Brothers in Arms sitting on my desktop - So I am an unhappy bunny not being able to play!!
I need to get a vid card.... Now this is a striaght-forward question:
Is the 128MB NVidia GeForce 6600 AGP 8x DDR 128-Bit DVI TV Out
better than the ATI Radeon 9600 XT 128/256mb?

6600
Yes, the 6600GT is as double so fast like the 9600 XT.
Matt22
03-20-2005, 10:33 AM
No not the GT, just the plain 6600, is it better than the ATI Radeon 9600 XT?
And, I know it sounds like an exam, but Can you give reasons for your answers?
6600 also better then 9600Xt.
But pay 50 € (or $ or what the hell - er gamershell) more to get much more perf.
see benchs (http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/hardware/grafikkarten/2004/nvidia_geforce_6600-serie/7/#abschnitt_spielebenchmarks) for some benchmarks. X600 is 9600 XT!

yes the 6600 is better than the 9600XT
the xt though is a good card, but isn't great.

If you go the cheap way and buy a 6600 instead of a 6600gt, you will regret it in a month or two.
But it is faster, yes.

9600 XT 256mb ownsss(for the price)!.
Matt22
03-20-2005, 01:52 PM
I'm gonna go for the 6600 GT which is £127 (About $254)
So do you think this one is a good deal....

Matt22
03-20-2005, 02:27 PM
Oh but there are so many places to buy it!
ahhhhhhhhh
Look... here > http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/cop...of_6600_GT.html (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_6600_GT.html)
a whole PAGE of 6600 GT's but different prices.. god knows which one to choose
And the same again here > http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.as...eywords=6600+GT (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.asp?CatID=15&Category=Graphics+Cards&ThumbNails=Yes&FilterCategories=264&FilterMinPrice=&FilterMaxPrice=&FilterKeywords=6600+GT) - scroll down
And one last one:

Can somone help me pick out the best of the best in those links?
I thank you for your help so far but i still need it!

I thought you already got a new PC and a new card last year when we helped you :Oo:
I can't chose the best card out of all those many cause I don't have that time, sorry, however i can give you tips so you can minimize that list and present to us with fewer cards.
1) DDR3 or GDDR3 are better, but cost more.
2) Try looking for a card that has a massive cooler on it, thus over clocking will only be better.
3) Try picking from companies you have heard before, thus increasing your cards reliability.
4) Higher clock rates are always welcome, ergo: Core 500+ and Memory 1000+ (in MHz)
I wanted to buy a 6600GT from "Point of view" they have good cards and good games that comes with it (Hitmen 3, FarCry and prince of Persia)
Now, browse and have fun, cause that's the best game :D
Matt22

Ok right, thanks.
I have narrowed it down to these 4 >
1. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo...roductID=161438 (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=161438)
2. http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/product_detail....GPNV&pgroup=VID (http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/product_detail.asp?stype=5&productcode=1511-4060&group=AGPNV&pgroup=VID)
3. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo...roductID=174171 (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=174171)
4. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/cop...of_6600_GT.html (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_6600_GT.html) (The 5th one down)
Could I just take a few more moments of your time to ask you which is THE BEST out of these (Dont worry about pricing, they are all a good deal in price)
Strawberry knight
03-20-2005, 08:52 PM
Ok, forget about the second one.
The first one doesn't have enough details.
The 3rd one is using DRR3, not GDDR3 as you can get with other cards (faster response time for memory=faster game play and better over clocking)
On the last page, the second one is good, and the last one is good too.
If you can get the Point of View GeForce 6600 GT, get it :D

03-20-2005, 08:56 PM
I have a 9600XT and the GPU speed on that is 500MHz and memory is at 600 DDR2...
Now I don't know if youre talking bout the memory on the cards cuz I've checked and I haven't seen any card with faster GPU than 500MHz :Oo: '
or maybe it's just me

If you can get the Point of View GeForce 6600 GT, get it
I've found it! here > http://www.gladiatorcomputers.com/acatalog...GRAPOV6600GTAGP (http://www.gladiatorcomputers.com/acatalog/NVidia_AGP_Graphics_Cards.html#AGRAPOV6600GTAGP)
(Click your scrollbar half the way down and you should see it)
Now this other one from GigaByte here > http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo...roductID=174171 (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=174171)
Is much cheaper (I dont mind about not having FarCry!)
The Specs are nearly all same on both of them except a few things:
GigaByte:
Memory Speed: 1000MHz
DDR 3
Point of View:
Memory Speed: 900 MHz
GDDR 3 (I checked manufacturer site)
So...what to do...what to do.... :crybaby:

don't get point of view its crappy.
that guy is a fool and fell for the added software trick.
point of view may as well be a generic brand.
stick with brands like EVGA, gigabyte , and XFX
by the way, if it ships to where you live,
www.newegg.com is the best bet.
and by the way, just bc ur gpu has a high core clock does not mean it is good.
9600's have a shortage on pipelines, something like 4.
9800PROs have 8, and also have slower clockspeeds than 9600XT, but are better regardless.
my 9800pro is awesome, and a 6600GT is even better. have fun with that.

newegg.com don't ship to the UK. And matt, why are you always saying you know more when you are still stuck?.

Would that work in the UK?

Did you even try it? (And no, I didn't fell for nothing, the card is simply good)
Point of view is a better choice between those two that Matt22 asked for, because of the memory type (GDDR3) the 900Mhz is easy to make 1000mhz+ so i don't see the problem in that, moreover you will get a much better performance comparing to Gigabytes DDR3 memory type while over clocked to 1000mhz. (faster access rate)
And matt22, the XFX one is the same as POV's card, However POV has a bigger cooler.
NOTE: XFX comes with 2 DVI connections, POV comes with 1 DVI and one normal connection. (The blue thingy)

stick with XFX they r a good brand i got 1 a XFX 6800GT and it overclocks really good 2
but have u had a look on WWW.OVERCLOCKERS.CO.UK
i get ever thing off there really good site and good prices. :smartass:

Overclockers is a strange site for graphics cards...I dont want to buy there.
Im aware of the 6800 but no, I cant afford it, lol who would buy a 6600 GT when they have enough for a 6800! a mad man! thats who!
Either way, Grim could you take a look at this one [ http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-150-085&depa=0 ] and tell me if its a pownage card, in releation to what cards we've look at so far, the POV, etc...
I thank you all for your responses, but I would like Grim to answer this one :D
Why only grim should answer?
Trust me!
OK, but he can't answer if the Link doesn't work! So man correct it.
Er, u wanna tell us u can pay a 6600 (150 €) but can't pay 200 € for 6600 GT or 6800 LE?
"Work, work, work." It's worth the money u have to pay for it more.

If you are talking about the XFX, it's basically the same card as POV's. However:
XFX has its own cooler, POV uses the original NVIDIA coolers (on older cards, like the TI series and perhaps some FX series cards are better of with a different cooler) the cooler isn't bad, it's big and covering the memory nicely enough.
Both cards can over clock even more, so you practically get the same scores (of over clocking) because they seem to use the same memory. However, once again the clock rates will be dependent on the cooler it self, as for how much it can cool.
The biggest difference is the connection type to the monitor, XFX uses DVI connections ONLY (it has 2 of them), make sure your monitor supports this kind of connection. (Just look at the picture on Newegg, and compare)
POV uses two types, the DVI and the standard blue connection, which I forgot how it has called.
Both cards are good; pick the one you think looks nicer. (Or with to proper connection)
I'll go for the POV, but that's just me :D
I´think every card with 2 DVI-outputs has minimum one adapter to switch it to VGA-output (blue)
@ Matt: I haven't said u must work, i only wanted start u thinkin about paying 50 € more for at least 30-50 % more performance.

Magus

but converters cost money, and can sometimes.. give badder experience with the card, 1 dvi and 1 vga output is much handier., but thats my 20 cents

It looks excellent and it has 1000 Mhz memory speed which is 100Mhz more than the Point of View one.
Its also cheaper, and its based in the UK so I will get a good guarantee.
