okay so here's the deal, my sister brought her pc here today and she wants me to hook it up with our pc, so I try to make a LAN-network.
but the problem is, it keeps on telling me that the cable is not plugged in, so could someone try and help me out?

Well, first of do you use a Router/Splitter or do you direct connect?
If you direct connect the 2 PCs you need a different kind of cable.
And there was something with a certain IP both PCs gotta have. :D

well unfortunately enough I don't have a router, so I have to direct connect, I have this strange cable with at both ends the same strange round head, so I connected them both to the hole they fit into approxamitelly next to the tv out for the screen.
am I doing it right?

L.O.L. ah the n00b mistakes...reminds me in my younger days.
Well, for an direct connect you need a crossover cable and not the regular one. It looks
the same as the regular one but the lines are...you guessed it...crossed over. Then you
need to put in a working IP. They must be identical on both PCs but the last section. For
example:
you have: 123.321.213.01
she should have:123.321.213.02
But it must be a working IP :smartass:

thanks kami, now I'm getting somewhere. well the cable says "interconect" all over it, so I think it's a good cable ;) how do I change IP's or check if they're working ones??
but one more thing, what's up with the pc saying that the cable is not connected?

What OS are both PCs? Cos with WinXP its just a case of getting the connection and running network setup. Everything else is automatic.
Of course you have to get a connection first. You have to make sure that your cable is a 'crossover' one like Kami said. Some shops test them for you, but Im guessing if the PCs are saying they arent connected (and you dont get a light coming on next to the ethernet port) then your cable isnt a crossover one. You can get cheap adapters that crossover the wires so you dont need to buy a new cable or anything.
Also the ethernet port is the rectangular one not a round one. Which one is the round one??

sure kami go ahead, I have two hours of german at school since last year and I had a 1/10 on my last test (damn you passiv times) but still, I can always give it a try.
hmmmmm so I've just taken the wrong cable maybe, but my brother (he's ugly) said that the cable was were I took this cable, so was he maybe wrong or was he just bugging me to show me that he's smarter??,
anyways, keep the good help coming, who knows maybe I'll get it fixed?? thanks to you off course ;)

what the freak is freaking wrong with me, OFF COURSE IT CAN'T WORK freaking me
I should have known when my sister's pc said something about "dual screen" after turning the pc on when I connected the wire, I SHOULD HAVE FREAKING KNOWN WHEN I SAW THE TV OUT AND THE LCD PORTS RIGHT NEXT TO THE ONE I USED
I AM A FREAKING MORONIC NOOB THAT'S TRYING TO MAKE A LAN NETWORK VIA THE GRAPHICS CARD :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:
okay now that's out, I'm gonna need some help now thank you
I guess I just took the first "black" cable I found, that was what my brother told me to look for, and then I just hooked it up in the holes it fitted into.
I'm a noob, yes I am and I admit it :(

Choc, a crossover cable is just like an ethernet cable that connects into the LAN port on your PC.
Go to your local computer supply store and ask for a crossover cable :)

i dont know if your dail up or what not so heres a diagram:
CLICKY!

if you dail up you need a crossover cable, which is not a regular ethernet cable, will state crossover on the package. sharing the net through a daisy chain pc is a bit tricky with dial up but i dont know what you have yet.
If you have CABLE or DSL get a cheap rounter around $30 and 3 RJ45 ethernet cables in there respective needed lenghts and follow the diagram.

Ppl!! he said round cable!
First, those things are OLD
Second, you need a terminator on a T shaped connector on each end of the wire
Third. 2 cheap ethernet cards (RJ45 connector-the rectangular one), and a few meters of crossover cable shouldn't cost more than 30$. If you have winxp it's mindless work for 30 min (10 if you're a pro :D ).
You could just tell your sister to get over it :D But I wouldn't reccommend that if shes a slapper.

i think the easiest way is to just get a router. no actionman business with IP and nothing.
Just plug it in. :D

ya know what, it seems my brother came home this night  so I'm just gonna let him do whatever he wants to do
okay thanks everyone, when we will buy a new pc, I'll make sure we also buy a router and some crossover cable, or else just a wireless thingy, that seems even easier then connecting wires

If you get a router you do not need a Cross over cable. Crossed Cable is only for direct link :D

well then....................;just in case I need a direct link
