The GIMP

My first question: can this do animations? Because I want to link all the trailers for Black (the game) together into a 38X38 avatar, and I've got the GIMP and Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0. Do I have any hope of doing this with either of these programs?
Sorry if this is really obvious...I'm just about as much of a noob at this as you can be. The only xperience I've got with editing is what I have from up to this point in the year in Photo class in school (Which uses Photoshop CS--I'm so lucky :P )

Have any of you had any problems with the GIMP DLL's? I've been having savng problems in Word, but I don't know if they are due to the GIMP or not. Final Q: Exactly how powerful is the GIMP compared to Photoshop 7.0?

I make my moviesigs or avatars in imageready (comes with photoshop). Just register at http://www.deadly-designs.com/ and I'll answer when i have time later tonight....
