Lan network

I've just succesfully installed (drivers included) a ethernet to usb converter on my computer. Now I'd like to use the good old ethernetport (the port previously used for the internet connection) for a lan network. I made a new connection using the xp connection wizard and had no problems there, as I had done this dozens of times at lan partys and at friends houses.

Strangely enough it does not work and gives me the following warning: One of the network cables is not inserted. However, they are and I've checked multiple times. What am I doing wrong here?

Try another cable.
