Question about Mods from a Computer-Gaming Noob

Let's say I have a saved game in the middle of Half-Life 2, but I have a mod I want to play.

1. How does installing mods work (specifically a total/partial conversion mod), and how do I know where to install them?
and 2. How do I continue playing Half-Life 2 without the mod, after I'm done with it?

Be more specific about a mod, which one. Mod is no more then an alternative program of the game, it uses game's engine and thats it.
