here my specs:
xp athlon 2600 2.0 ghz
ati 9700 pro 128mb agp 8x
seagate hd 12 gb,
ballistix 512 [so thats 1024 ram with both.]
ddr ram 512
msi kt4V ms-6712 ver:10 mobo
my problem im getting low frames per second on most of games, even hl one mods
on day of defeat on half life one, my frames per second are very low 15 -20 , i cant understand how this could be, so i though
maybe its the ram, so i brought ballistix 512 ram to bring my ram up to 1024 it set me back 54 uk pounds and the only different i see is faster load for windows, my games still run slow.
my card is surely good to play hl one mods.

Hmm yea thats strange, you're setup is pretty good. The RAM will certainly help, although if the old RAM was slower the ballistix stick will default to the slower speeds of the old RAM, but 1Gig is good...
The only thing I can think of at the minute is, how much HD space you got left? And how long since you're last defrag? Also I've gotta mention the mandatory response of 'have you got the latest drivers?' hehe although you probably have.

A 7 year old hd..............
So you have a system that has all the specs to run day of defeat (first one) at an acceptable or even fairly high framerate and you bottleneck that with a 7 year old harddrive..................
Come on dude, unscrew your case, get a gun and put the old bastard out of his misery!

I am just amazed that it still works, it must be so beat up right now by turning power on and off that it must make a sound like an old fridge.
Yes, it can lower framerates. As you may know it has all the data of the game stored and if that is slow then it bottlenecks the whole game.
Just aim between the chips and put it out of its misery.

The cache can be viewed as an buffer, the more the better. Any new hd will improve your system immensly, so will this one.
On another note, defragmenting your hd doesn't have anything to do with having your hd freshly formatted. Just defrag it, google if you want specifics why this is important.
