CPU compatibillity
Hey folks,
It is really time to upgrade my pc, but I can not change my mobo. That is because of my SPSS student license and my budget.
So the point is, Compaq has written on their site, that it is no problem to put an Athlon X2 4800+ (but not "higher") on my mobo. But my system works with a 939 socket, while the mentioned cpu is one with the AM2 socket.
BTW, here are the links to the specs of both my mobo and that cpu:
HP and Compaq Desktop PCs*-* Motherboard Specifications, MS-7184 (AmethystM)*
AMD Processors for Desktops: AMD Athlon? 64 Processor and AMD Sempron? Processor
- So what is your opinion? It is possible, and wise to put that cpu on that mobo?
- Is it neccessary to reinstal Windows, when I keep my current mobo (and only change the cpu)? That is important because of the mentioned SPSS license.
Thanks in advance!

Here is the 4800+ that you are looking for to put on your board ...
Home | AMD Shop
It's a socket 939 chip.

Thanks, Magus. I currently have a single core Athlon 64 3400+ running at 2.2 Ghz.
There are plenty AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4800+ cpus at 4Launch.nl, but all of them are with socket AM2. The same goes for Alternate.

Maybe you can find a used one.. Also, you might need to upgrade your bios before upgrading, just in case.

NEVER TALK ABOUT BIOS UPGRADING.
Time to tell you guys a small story.
Just today little Magus had the idea of upgrading his bios in hopes to stop cod4 from making a total lockdown, asus had a nice little program. So little Magus runs the program, and the second he clicks the shiny FLASH button, the pc gets a total lockdown and little Magus got really really scared, so scared he couldn't even shit his pants anymore. Ah well but luckily his mobo had a recovery bios and that fixed it all back to the oldest bios. In which little Magus himself surprises himself his cpu is supported because everybody said that wasnt supportted til a bios update.
And now i'm facing small hangs all the time that stops me from typing, might be firefox but ah well. oh and after testing it is firefox
Moral of this story: Don't trust bios flashing

Well, my mobo is plug and play, so Iguess I will try it without flashing. The cpu is a supported one, so I think it will work.
