At bgdave1, your system should run Vista fine. If you want to run the 64-bit version you really need at least 4GB of ram.

Many people don't like Vista because their trying to run it on an underpowered system. I understand their complains because most of them are buying minimum requirement PC's from major Manufacturers and that sucks. Others complain because they could score 12,000 points in 3Dmark06 with Windows XP and Vista only get's them 11,000. Vista is going to give you a slight Performance Drop. I can't argue that, to do so would make me a liar.

But Vista has it's advantages and your system is more than capable of using them. From the Gamers point of view I can give you (2) right off the top of my head. DirectX10support and if your game locks up (which happens to everyone sooner or later) you can close the game and restart it without having to Re-Boot the PC.

Personally, I have Windows XP Pro, Vista 32-bit and 64-bit all installed on my PC. I Luv Vista, I use Vista 32-bit everyday. It's my main Operating System, I only use XP for comparisions when I do a hardware review.

But my System is what is considered Top of the Line compared to others :-)

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 @ 3.6 GHz
EVGA 780i SLI Deluxe
4 x 1GB PC2 9200 (1150 MHz)
(2)x XFX 880GTX
CM 1250 watt PS
(2) WD 80GB SATA @ Raid0 (Vista 32-bit)
(1) Maxtor 250 GB SATA (Vista 64-bit)
(1) Maxtor 250 GB SATA (Windows XP Pro)

Same here. I use Vista x64 Premium on a very good spec with 4GB of RAM. None of my games run slowly or unreliably and I have not had a system crash since I upgraded from Windows XP Pro. In fact I would go as far as saying that I have had a much better gaming/media experience on my Vista PC then I did on XP.
