Help with UR2k4 and Siege2004 CD key error

Hi there...I hope someone can help me out here...I recently reinstalled UR2K4 with hopes of installing the Siege2004 V1.05 mod. Now...here's my dilemma. When I run the game normally it works fine...wonderfully! On the other hand, when I try to run the
start_siege2004.bat, in order to play the Siege mod, it says my CD key appears to be invalid and that I will have to reinstall the game in order to fix that. Now...I have to enter the correct CD key to install the game in the first place. I have uninstalled and reinstalled (cleaning out all folders and even the registry values) I even went so far as to purchase the game from Steam, once again to no avail. If I update the game to the newest patch, I have to change the name of the exe file and change the target path, but it will work if I do that. If I don't change all that I get the same CD key error when I try to run the regular game...I'm at a loss here...I'm running Vista although I've tried running this program as an administrator and I have tried changing the name of the Siege file, changing compatibility mode, and I think I've tried everything conventional. Maybe someone can come up with something unconventional? Oh please...Oh yea one more thing, I went so far as to even try a keygen...tried a dozen keys with the same effect.

What happens if you reinstall the game without the mod?

works until i run the patch then I have to change the exe filename and the target path but then it still works. When I add the mod the original game still works but when I try to run the mod I get the cd key error

And the cd key is entered correctly? Else try and see what happens if you type zeros (0) instead of os (o), or os instead of zeros.

yes I did that although the only way I could do that was to change the CD key in the registry. My copy of the game won't let me install without the correct CD key. I can't continue the installation until the correct cd key has been entered. And I'm not going to install it 20 more times just to see if 20 different CD keys might work. So I changed the reg CD key instead
