Default Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer problem

My son has Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare for PC. We've had it installed on our computer before but I recently re-formatted our PC and reinstalled the game. Now, when he tries to play multiplayer, it tries to go into the game and then restarts the computer.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Any other situations in which your pc reboots? If the restart also happens when running other programs, it could be Windows' update function. Especially in Vista, lastmentioned function tends to take control of the pc, and thus does not ask for permission to reboot after having automatically downloaded new updates. So if it does also happen in other cases, it can be an aid to set Windows Update into "let me decide".

It can also be things like outdated hardware drivers (that game asks the latest available for your graphics card), and system instabillity due to disk/registry fragmentation and "large" temporary file folders (even after a fresh install, especially Vista leaves a lot of trash behind after setup).

So it would be the best, if you post further info here about which operating system and hardware you have.

OH yeah....sorry.....We are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (just as we were prior to the reinstall of the OS). I've updated my video and sound drivers to the latest drivers. This is the only time the PC reboots on it's own.

Have you checked your system for virusses? McAfee (a very good one) has got an online version: McAfee Freescan

Does the pc give you a short blue flash screen before the reboot. If so, what does it say? If you need to have your pc rebooting when entering that blue screen, you need to do the following...

Go to your configuration screen, select system, select advanced and select boot en recovery settings* in that screen, go to system errors* and uncheck "reboot system automaticly"*

Tell us what that blue screen says.

*literally translated from my Dutch version of XP, your English copy may have some parts named a bit different. Everything has been explained in such a matter that simply folowing my lead would get you where you'd want too.

No short blue screen before rebooting. It just reboots.
