Manufacturer AMD - Thoroughbred
Model Number XP2400+ CPU Speed (MHz) 2000 Format Socket A Now people who read P&M will know im pretty p*ssed wih this , but i wanted to know ether Thoroughbred was any good?and do you think i should get a 2700+? and would that be worth it? and if anyone knows the speed of a 2700+? and if i was to Overclock the 2400+, what powerfull fan would any of you reccomend ![]() EDIT: little more info they gave me:- Pentalpha Ultra Quiet Socket A / 370 / 7 Heatsink & Fan up to XP2800+. Does this meen i can clock it up to a 2800+? and still stay save, they say they havnt got any Arctic Silver 3 paste on it, hers what they said when i asked them "and do you use good quality thermal paste (ie. Artic Silver)?":- No, the thermal pad is more than enough for this bundle, on the high end Bartons, we would use the best heat sink and Artic silver 3. So would i need to apply some Artic Silver to it, to be on the safe side, or is it really just for Bartons.

oh boy... first off, Interman is your man for explaining the specific differences between cpus.
There are some here who will tell you to look for a specific stepping series of the 1700+xp (JIUHB, I think) and overclock the bejeezus out of it rather than buy any other model of AMD cpu. And from some of the things I have seen, there is some justification in this. when it comes to overclocking, the motherboard is a critical element, AND the case you use. Personally, I  Antec cases because they have great airflow, with a lot of fan options. They have a new one out that allows the mounting of a single 12cm fan in the back! : :

Thermal paste can make a diff, I guess. I don't use it and am fine. I just use the stock heatsink/fan that came with the cpu and I do fine.

There is a big difference between using the thermal pad that comes with the heatsink or using proper thermal paste. It's not something that's going to make the difference of whether your CPU explodes or not, unless you live on the sun.
Invest in some Artic Silver. |

Okay, let's see...
Thermal pads are garbage. They're invented to keep the cpu so hot that the average joe can't overclock his cpu, because it'd just go unstable and crappy. Arctic Silver 3 is good, and not too expensive, so it can cut off a couple of degrees from your temp. The rating of a fan just means that it'll keep a cpu of that speed cool enough to function properly, so it doesn't really say much regarding how well it performs. The 2400+ t-bred is a good cpu, because it has been known to overclock quite well (check out http://www.overclockers.com's cpu database for some examples). Bartons have more L1 cache, so they're more efficient than t-breds when run at the same clock frequency, and they have also been known to overclock nicely. Before you get a barton you should at least check whether your motherboard supports them, or if a bios flash will do the trick. Since you probably want to overclock more than just a grain then you'll need a good heatsink / fan combo. The Thermalright SLK-800 and SLK-900 sinks are great, but not every motherboard has room for the SLK-900, since capacitors are in the way. Panaflo and Papst fans are good if you want a decent chunk of CFM (cubic feet of air moved pr minute by the fan), but if you want to get REALLY good results then you'll need to go for Delta fans. Deltas are extremely loud (the 80mm fan is rated at 52dB), so some use them only to overclock all they can, and then switch back to a quieter fan when they've run 3dmark at the overclocked speed they reached.

I would recommend a Zalman 7000 heatsink... they are very quiet and has a 92 mm fan, it can run several 100 RPM slower then SLK/ALPHA combos but still perform just as good.
However, i don't know if its released for todays athlon yet. (only for P4 and athlon 64). Look for reviews on google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-...man+7000+review |
