Playing issues SOF Payback
Greetings...
I was recently given a copy of SOF Payback which I installed ok. However, the installation didn't leave a link on my desktop, and when I go to the folder and click the icon there, all I get is a black screen. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling twice with the same results.
I already have SOF 2 installed which plays fine, as do all the Half Life series. However, I can't seem to install the first SOF game. I get an Installation wizard problem. The progress bar goes right across to 100% but after about 30 seconds or so just disappears.
My PC is only a couple of months old and has plenty of RAM and a good video card. I'm running XP Home updated.
Curiously, it's the first game I've had without a code to enter... didn't ask for one, either. I'm not complaining, mind!
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.
John

Make sure you uninstall it, and then reinstall it in compatibility mode, choosing for compatibility mode windows 2000.

Thank you, Richard... I have uninstalled Payback (again) and reinstalled it. It installs fine, but nowhere, at no time, do I get the option to install in compatability mode.
It asks me if I want to install Direct X and after that, finishes. But the game still won't load. The installation leaves no icon of the desktop, and if I go to D drive and click on the disc I get a box offering me Play, Uninstall and so on. I click Play and get the black screen.
Any other ideas?
Cheers, John

explore the disk, right click on the installer and go to to properties. then choose the compatibility tab.
After the installation you may need to do the same with the game file in the program files folder.

I went to the Programmes folder and right clicked the Play icon. That gave me a dialogue box where I was able to choose the Compatability you suggested. It made no difference... the game still won't load. Black screen forever... grrrrrrr.
If I uninstall again, I will try to find a way to install it in the Compatability mode.

You have to right click on the install file - the setup.exe - or whatever it maybe called and set it for compatibility mode.
Since you were able to find the play icon in the Program Files then you haven't done this correctly. Uninstall the game again.

Please consider me to be a rank ameteur at all this... do not assume anything.
I'll explain once again.
1) The game appears to install OK.
2) The opening screen gives me options to Install, Read Me, Exit.
3) It does not leave a shortcut on the desktop.
4) You cannot right click the opening screen, or any screen that follows right to the end of installation.
5) In the Programmes folder there is NO .exe file. There is NO Setup file.
6) The icon I clicked on as a start link in the Activision folder may, in fact, not be... it doesn't seem to have any file extension attached to it. But there's nothing else there to click on.
It's becoming a nightmare.

Your not suppose to be looking at the Program Files. Look for the "setup.exe" file on the installation CD.

yes, I undertand. However, the CD only displays the first splash screen. The one with three options:
Install
Read Me File
Exit
How do I find the .exe file?

close that splash screen and explore the cd via "my computer" (rightclick on the cd drive icon there, and choose for "explore").
