Toshiba to make fastest DRAM chips

TOKYO (CBS.MW) - Japanese electronics giant Toshiba said Friday it will mass produce the world fastest DRAM chips from 2005.

Toshiba, along with Elpida Memory, will use Rambus' XDR memory interface technology for the new Dynamic Random Access Memory chips.

"The new DRAMs will offer eight times more bandwidth than the current DRAMs we produce," Toshiba spokesman Makoto Yamada said.

The companies said in a statement the new DRAMs will have multiple speed capabilities, with a3.2 GHz memory system for now and 6.4GHz later on.

Toshiba has been using Rambus's XDR technology to develop its next generation memory devices since Oct. 2002. Rambus has also licensed Sony and Sony Computer Entertainment to use the XDR technology.

Toshiba will start producing samples of the new DRAMs in 2004 with plans for mass production by early 2005.

That's 3 to 6 times faster than my CPU speed

Sounds like it.... Although it sounds like too incredible of a figure for something that'll come out relatively soon (2005)... I mean, what kinda CPU would be needed to operate with RAM at such speed?
