i read on a forum that homeworld 2 needs a video card that supports dx9 (i dont know if hardware or software) to run, if it doesnt support dont even install because the game wont run descently...
the guy that said that got the demo and saw that requirement on setup of hw2
i dont think thats true because a lot of people has dx7 and dx8 native video cards, only new video cards have support for dx9 (like gf fx, radeon 9800, etc)
maybe it gets better graphical quality with dx9, but i dont think it REQUIRES a dx9 native video card to run

you can still install directx9 on older gfx cards, i think it jus doesnt have as many specific features.

i know this cos my gfx card is old and ive installd directx9 and played hw2, so theres no problem.

Yeah, i update dx everytime cause some games wont even load without the drivers the game was developed with, doesnt mean any better performance, cept maybe the detonators for old geforce cards, like mine..

hmmmm i know I can install dx9 on an older card
my card is an gf4 mx440 64mb ddr w/ agp 8x (MSI), on the box it says my card supports dx8.1, but i doesnt, because its a gf4 mx440 (duh!) and as u can see on the reviews, i cant run pixel shader 2.0 here
a guy on other forum said that he saw on the setup of hw2 that the game requires a dx9 video card (a video card that has native (hardware) support for dx9, like all gf fx cards)
but i think it will run on cards that doesnt have native support for dx9, without some graphical effects, of course
its like halflife2, if u have a video card that has native support for dx9, the game will run with all graphical effects, but if ur card doesnt have that support, it will run anyway, without the goodies

No, homeworld 2 requires you to have dx9 SOFTWARE intalled. It does not expect you to have a card with teh hardware to make use of the latest functions though.

My understanding is that DX9 and the updates are released not only to add new features for Direct X but also to update and improve older features (i.e DX8 features are ehanced). I am probably wrong but I know for sure you can run it on any card (within reason).

People are getting confused by the need for DX9 and a card that can use the DX9 features.

Pretty much all of the GF4s have been designed to take advantage of DX8 features (like your one) and as you said the GF FX can utilise some of the latest DX9 stuff.

What does this mean for the rest of us? Nothing, only that in HL2 you won't get some of the newst effects like refraction in water.

well the people that have dx8 cards like the gf4 ti series will see most of the goodies.
but no the game does not require a dx9 card to play, that would be insane to make a game that only work with the latest cards, the company would loose shitloads of money since so few would be able to play it

so dont worry it will work on your card, maybe slow but it will still work :P

this demo sucks bigtime..

WHy ? because i get 0 fps in the game i cant even play it, all i see is a screen and i hear some music or so but i cant do nothing.

I mean this is not a game like unreal2 or so that requires a monster computer to play.

I have updated the drivers for my card, set down the graphics effets to low and still i cant play it.

Not very good impression so far, i dont think i buy the game.

The game rocks man. Just because the demo didnt work on your computer how can you judge it like that.

It preserved the same spirit as Homeworld, which i loved. Im definately going to buy the game. The only thing they could add on the game would be individual control of the ships, in the way you could drive them like a space shooter(X-wing alliance for example). That would rock.
