Please don't kill me for even bringing this up. Recently I bought a Mac to use in addition to my standby gaming PC. Mainly the MAc is just for web surfing and Photoshop but I did purchase a few games with it, just for shits and giggles. I was quite impressed with how well it ran UT2003 and MOHAA. The system is running on a 1.25ghz G4, Radeon9000, and 768megs of RAM. What do you guys think are the chances of Mac ever becoming a legitamate gaming platform? If you visit your local retailer you'll notice about 6 Mac games amongst the myriad of PC titles, I have seen first hand that a Mac can indeed handle whatever you can throw at it and with the new G5 coming out allong with Radeon9800 and GeforceFX cards now becoming available, why shouldn't Mac users get the joy of HalfLife 2, Doom3, or anyone of the other new "super games" that are about to come out? Just thought I'd throw that one out there, I still love my PC but I would really love to see what a Mac can do with some of the newer , more demanding games. What do yall think?

In my opinion, Macs are mainly used as multimedia machines. What I usually see them used for is to edit video and such. I am sure they could be used as a gaming machine but until ppl start making games for them they are not even close

Nonexistent. Macs are good for what they do (Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, etc). For Macs to be even considered good gaming machines they'd have to support a MS OS with DX9. Until that happens they'll never get anywhere as far as gaming goes.

I hear what your saying in reference to Macs not running DirectX, at the same time I've been wondering how difficult it would be to emulate DirectX within the new Panther OS. It probably sounds much easier than it really is, someone; I'm sure would have done it by now if it were all that simple. The fact that people view Macs as soley a mulimedia platform seems awflee regretful given that many of the newer systems boast some pretty juicey specs, God knows what the right programers could do with a new Dual Proc G5 and a Radeon9800XT. I think its high time Mac users world wide start petitioning the game development and publishing companies to release more games for the Mac. What do you guys think?

Ok, I'll give this a shot.
I think as far as Macs and gaming are concerned, it's kind of a chicken and egg situation. Mac users buy their machines for multimedia work because they are well known as excellent multimedia machines. These folks aren't gonna be rushing to the store to buy the latest release of a game (at least not in the numbers that would interest developers). Gamers buy PCs because there are so many more games for them.
Macintosh would have to launch a long-term and expensive media campaign, coupled with partnerships with game developers to break out of this mold (think of a new console launch) I really don't think they are all that interested. Macintosh has a niche that they do well with, so they don't have a whole lot of motivation to pursue something like this.
To get an idea of what is involved in something like this, look at Microsoft with the Xbox. Gates publicly committed 1 Billion dollars for the Xbox. Macintosh simply doesn't have pockets that deep.
The other, and probably biggest issue, with the Macs is the price tag. You mention that dual processor rig. I'm sure it would scream with the most modern games, if they were coded to run on the Mac, but from what I understand, they are many thousands of dollars more expensive than a top of the line gaming machine.

There's yet another big problem with Macs and that is that you cant mod their motherboards (well maybe you can I just don't hear anyone saying they have) or cases. I personally wouldn't buy a Mac even if I had money to burn. It would be like buying a Dell. I very much rather build my own PC. And like I said, until DX9 is available for macs, they'll never get anywhere. Microsoft controls the Industry not Apple.
