Xp Better For games than win 98??

i am currently running my games on win 98, all my gear in my pc is new, motherboard etc, would xp make a better different in performance as i am get pretty low fps lag in halo or thats mouse lag i dunno, and i get fps lag on spearhead in places and the new fifa 2003 demo when palyin all graphics high.

2.1 ghz xp alton processor
ati 9700 pro 128mb 8x
Kt400 motherboard msi
win 98 sec ed i think
512 drr ram

Xp is a memory hungry OS, but is damn good for networking

98 is a very old OS, i would suggest win2000 for an Average of both OS's

I don't think XP is a mem hog! It works wonderful for games and hardly ever crashes

I recently installed XP on a 500 Mhz P2 with 256M ram, and it is running great!

i think XP does a better job when it comes to playing games. just like Nxs said, the games hardly crashes... :thumbup:

it's hard to define best.. you could say that the os that gets the best performance in games is 'the best', and if you look at futuremark's top list you'll see windows 2000 on the top spots. It's weird though, because there's usually a 400 point difference between win2k sp4 and win2k sp2 - go figure ;)

i like win2k because i feel it leaves me with more power than winxp, but if you have to choose between only win98 and winxp you're MUCH better off with winxp

I used to not wanna switch to XP, thinking 98 SE was better for games.

Well, I've been using XP for a long time and had to install and keep 98SE for a while two weeks ago. I gotta tell you, I had forgotten how shitty it was to play games under Win98.

I had to restart my PC at least 15-20+ times a day. It was horrible. Pressing ctrl+alt+del is basically useless as when the PC freezes, that command doesn't work...And if the window does pop-up, it won't terminate any task sometimes. In WinXP, something crashes or freezes, you close it. It's as simple as that.

Performance in games is practically identical (I had compared a long time ago), BUT, one thing I've noticed is if I try to record a movie from a game with FRAPS under Win98, my frame rate goes from 90fps to about 10, where as in WinXP I get 30 like I should.

That's the main performance difference I noticed, but the main reason to use WinXP is to not have to restart every 15 minutes.
