I think we all noticed that the last few major gaming titles have shiped with a minimum of 3 or 4 cds and take up close to 3GB when installed. Word is that the gaming industry will be moving to DVD's instead of CD's to reduce costs and increase the amount of data per disk shipped.
When will they start? I dont know. All I do know is my last issue of PC Gamer came with a DVD instead of the usually CD! Which is useless to me, cause I don't have a DVD drive in my pc. I feel kinda cheated, but I'll let it slide for one month.
I'm wondering if any of you peeps have a DVD drive in your gaming machines and if so what kind? Is it a DVD-R or DVD/CD-R combo, etc.

Just for an example:
Code:
Epicgames' upcoming Unreal Tournament 2004, to be released this Christmas will come in two flavours, a CD-ROM version retailing for $39.99 (just under £30) and a special DVD edition retailing for $59.95 (£40). The DVD edition will comprise of the game on DVD, a bonus DVD with 150+ hours worth of video training content on how to create modifications and levels for the game. It will come in a limited edition metal box and will contain a Logitech Internet Chat Headset for use with the game's exclusive voice over IP (voice chat) technology, as well as an Unreal window sticker.
Americans will be lucky enough to receive a $10 rebate on either version of the game if they already own UT2003, though news on a similar offer in Europe is noticably hidden. When a European equivalent to this rebate or the DVD edition are announced, you'll be the first to know.

It sounds strange during upload-like someone farting! But it gets quiet! REAL QUIET...overall, its a nice drive-fast as crap too!

game companys wont change to pure dvd in the near future.
there are way to many in the world that dont even own a dvd-rom.
konami is the only company i know of and they are loosing shitloads of money for only releasing dvd version of games like mgs2 and the upcoming silent hill3, dunno wtf they are thinking :bucky!:
maybe in a few years we will see dvd only games for the pc but its still far away

Why do you say that, you can pick up a DVD-R for half the price of the games, they are cheap enough for people that can afford the games, to be able to afford the drives, and it's annoying as hell to have three CDs for one game, I would surely welcome a change to DVD-R.
