I almost got my pc quiet by putting in a Zalman cooler and psu. Now the only thing left thats irritating me (a bit) is a whistle. It's not continuous so can it be resonance? I've got a radeon 8500 gpu with a tiny cooler, maybe thats the problem?
Post if you got any ideas.

disregard ddr's ramblings ;)
the first thing that came to mine was that the whistle could come from vibrations somewhere, but I doubt it. Try listening close to the various components and see if you can diagnose it further. It might be the 8500, but it's not really a card that needs a whole lot of cooling so I doubt that's it, but if it is then it could be smart to maybe try a very big heatsink (preferably copper).

Thanks for your reply interman, why didn't I think of that?
I've opened it up and listened, it seems to be coming from the cpu-cooler. There are no wires in its way and changing the RPM to quiet mode doesn't help (besides making the whistle more audible). It's a Zalman 7000Al and I bought it only about two weeks ago. Maybe I should take it back, it's supposed to be a quiet cooler. If somebody has got an idea how to get rid of this whistle, let me know.

thermalright heatsinks are amazing, and you can get a papst fan or something so its nice and quiet, and you'll still get good cooling... the zalman may have a messed up fan on it though and that may be the whole problem, so you may want to check into that
