Gothic 2 help

I was playing Gothic 2(fantastic game) and I keep having to leave these chests out in the wilderness and such cuz I can't lock pick, its starting to bug me. Even though im a paladin now the stupid guy thorbin doesnt trust me, its like saying, "I know you're the cheif justice in the supreme court, but I can't really trust you." please help me someone.

If you haven't killed off the thieves in the sewers, they can teach you.

DID you complete the quest Trust of the Gods(or something like that) its to earn Torbins trust.
