how much are you willing to spend, and will you need a new monitor? if so, lcd or crt?

go for this
P4 2.8 800 1mb cach
ASUS p4p800
512 mb DDR
ati Radeon 9800pro 128mb
the price of it is normal and the other details dont play that much of a role
guess this system can run them both smoothly

lcd monitors today still suck at gaming-unless your talking about the REALLY pricey ones. like 1000-1500 dollar range.

i love my samsung syncmaster 959nf. the most expensive samsung 19¨ crt, but it's definitely worth it.
regarding the specs you might want to swap the motherboard for a asus p4c800, and make sure you get 2x256mb ram, not 1x512, unless you plan on soon getting another stick on 512mb.
you could also consider going for a a64 motherboard and a a64 3200+. that'll be notably faster, but if you're going for a64 then you'll want to wait about a month or so, because new cpu "versions" are on the way, and if you upgrade then then you'll have more to choose from later.
the 9800 pro is a fine choice.

I have :
Intel PIV 2.66 @ 3.2 Ghz
P4C800 Deluxe
4 Gb Ram 333
GF FX 5900 Ultra MSI
Samsung 17"
I Believe i should be able to run Doom 3 & Half Life 2 the smoother way
But anyway im regarding to buy a 3.0 fsb 800 with HT.
IMO the P4C800 is the best investment you could ever make, notice my OC from 2.6 to 3.2 (I can manage to get 3.4 Ghz, but without all the tweaking's that the motherboard BIOS as to offer. memory timings 2.5;2;2;5 nice i believe :] )
