Assistence needed?

Could someone please explain to me how to talk during a multiplayer online game. Other players have said hello to me etc during a game and I can't work out how to reply, I feel so rude! Thanks to who ever can offer me some advise.

Sorry, I thought this was a forum for my specific game. My game however, is Painkiller. Although I suspect the way which to chat is universal amongst most online multiplayer games. And by the way, I mean typed conversation, not actual talking as such! Ta!
