I wouldn't bother yet, i'd wait until the next generation of cards arrive, ive got a 9500 pro & i have considered getting a 9800 but with the next lot of cards such as the X800 XT on the horizon its better to wait for them to arrive wherebye you will see a real diference instead of the small improvements you would see if you only upgraded to the 9800.

the 9600 isn't a very fast card though. with for instance a used 9800xt you'd be able to play at far greater resolutions with aa/af enabled, and your overall framerate would be drastically better. since the rest of your pc isn't top-end you probably won't noticed that huge a difference between a 9800xt and for instance the x800 pro because your cpu etc will be a bottleneck

fair play, currently i can play far cry in max detail everthing and it doesnt slow 2 badly, when of course heavy outdoors action starts then it does slow but not to the point where its unplayable, bearin in mind its only the standard 1024x768 resolution wiv no AA/AF.
And of course thinkin HL-2 (if ever  ) and doom 3 commin out do u reck the 9600 cud handle max detail everythin?? Must admit playin games for me lately in anythin less than max detail is a bit dissapointin as i like the games to look sweet as along wiv play great.

I personally do not think u will need 2 upgrade for some time. My comp specs are lower than your and i have a geforce 4 and even farcry runs flawlessly on my machine.
