Post error...please help.

3 times now when my 9 y/o was surfing/playing games our comp has locked up. It has the same symptoms. When I come home and turn it on. I get no video output and 1 long beep and 2 or 3 short beeps. If left alone the hard drive will spin like its booting normaly but it will just just shut down by itself. I cant see any info cause the screen stays black. I eventually learned, when this happens I have to put the boot disc in and start in safe mode to get the display back. By the time I look at it he usually doesnt remember exactly what he was doing, but he plays a lot of web games at kids sites and some kids games like tonka or some such. Anyone know what those beeps are trying to say?

98SE w/all updates
geforce 2 w/latest driver
256 mb ram

Yes I know it needs to be thrown out, but needs to get me thru next year at least.

yeh umm, if u have an HP or Dell or compaq, etc. then you can check on there site and they usally have a defintion for what the beeps mean, other then that, check your motherboard maker.

If no one else posts anything and the mobo maker, or computer maker doesn't say anything, umm I would bet on changing your computer to Win2000, itll be just as fast but it should be much more stable.

might be a virus, i got one like that once, might need to reformat.

Thank you Sepht. Mine was a boutique at the time, but I do know its an old ASUS. Ill find out the model and check their site. I did another scan just yesterday and have no virus. And this problem has been infrequent 3x in about 2 months. Thanks again. :thumbup:
