I am building a pc off up newegg. i got a nice setup for my price range but now im stuck. Geforce Vs Radeon, as if we haven't heard that enough is exactly my problem. I can either go with ATI RADEON 9600XT, or nVIDIA GeForce FX5700. I never have had a gfx card before, which is why i want to make sure that i get a good one. they both cost 138 bucks, and i just need to know which one. Also i realize how cheap the cards are, would they be able to run games like half life 2, or stalker? thanks

If you're aiming for hl2 than a radeon would be a better option, they even gave free hl2 some time ago, if you look around you may get it too maybe .

i've been looking around, and they said that the ati is better at directx, and bad at opengl. Whereas geforce is ok all around, but the quality isn't that great. Doom3 uses opengl, but im not gonna be playing that. Since most newer games are playing on directx, ill probably get the radeon. In Counterstrike, the only game i can run on my current setup, u can change between opengl, software, and some other thing. Can u do that in other games?

Nope, can't do that in newer games.
nvidia isn't good allround, its better in opengl, there comparable (ati usually has a slight advantage) in dx games but ati outperforms nvidia with antialisng and anisotropic filtering on. It's your call, but you won't be able to fully use ati's performance with aa and af in future games.

ATI radeon 9600XT 256 .. with out a doubt ...the 5700 (stock ) isent that good ..in fact it sux . if you want the 5700 buy the ULTRA ..but that will cost you more ..so you better buy the 9600XT ..super card :thumbup:
add : o ..and YES the radeon will run STALKER and HL2 with no prob ;)

9600xt with aax4 and afx8 in hl2? Sure it will run, but the framerates, even if they will be decent at some times, it won't leave and margin of power for those more intense scenes.

9800 Pro is 20 bucks more expensive then the 9600XT and its much better in performance, a lot more powerful.
