silent hill 2 pc game - will not play!

I need help.
I have installed silent hill2 directors cut. When i click on play game a window comes up with
'a crash occured the last time that the game was played. Using safe graphics option' then a black screen with bits of colour appears and disappears. I have installed updates for my graphics card and 9.0 directx and updated everything else on my computer. i have more than the desired requirements, and have unistalled and reinstalled the game.

Do you have any ideas??
