The card is compatible, but will only run in low-medium quality.

thanks,
now I just need to figure out how to get past an error message saying:
Initializing OpenGL driver
...getting DC: succeeded
...GLW_ChoosePFD( 16, 16, 0 )
...35 PFDs found
...GLW_ChoosePFD failed
...GLW_ChoosePFD( 16, 16, 0 )
...35 PFDs found
...GLW_ChoosePFD failed
...failed to find an appropriate PIXELFORMAT
...restoring display settings
...WARNING: could not set the given mode (3)
...shutting down QGL
...unloading OpenGL DLL
...assuming '3dfxvgl' is a standalone driver
...initializing QGL
...WARNING: missing Glide installation, assuming no 3Dfx available
...shutting down QGL
----- CL_Shutdown -----
RE_Shutdown( 1 )
-----------------------
GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem
Any suggestions from the experts would be much appreciated. Do I need a different driver ?

I think you should consider looking at an entry-level Nvidia card, such as a GeForce FX5700 LE 128MB 8XAGP Graphics Card, which you should be able to pick up for about £58.00 (including VAT). Choose a slightly older Nvidia card only due to the fact that it sounds like you don't play any new AAA games and Nvidia are reknowned for their compatibility with legacy software and games. This chipset will also provide somekind of rendering acceleration in CAD programs. Any graphics card higher than this then you will be wasting your money for features you may never use. It should be ideal for playing games that require OpenGL acceleration support, such as Half-Life, Counterstrike, Wolfenstein, BF1942, etc.
I have a link to a cheap UK supplier if your interested.

The likes of ET will run good on even the old Geforce 440MX's. I had one and I played ET on it with 256mb of RAM in my machine. The card itself was a shitty 64mb, so work it out. I now have a FX5200 128mb and I can run Doom 3 on it set on high and at something like 800x600, I think, and I get fairly playable framerates from that. If it's just games like E.T you want to play, then I wouldn't spend more than 40 on a new card. If I were you (like me) I'd wait a bit and then buy either a ATI 9800 or an Nvidia 5900. Both should be fairly cheap soon enough and are well capable of playing any newer games to be released in the future. But PC graphics cards are mad. Why the f**k can't they just make it more simple for people, and cheaper too? Robbing bastards!

yeah i used 2 run it on one 2, in high detail may i remind you! jus get the latest drivers and see how you get on, if not save your pennies for a monster graphics card! buying entry level stuff will only have you replacing it again within anytime soon as games keep looking nicer and nicer and using up more juice
