The Call of Duty MP in-game chat won't work

I have this issue with the in-game chat (the T or Y key) during a multiplayer game: once I hit the key, I get the usual "say" or "say_team" displayed with the cursor blinking, but when I try to input the message, no text is displayed and the cursur just keeps on blinking. I must say that this feature used to work ok, but now that it no longer does, I have tried reinstalling the game (deleting the complete folder in the process), and now it appears that the game does not respond to any attempts to input text by keyboard: I cannot enter the name or the cd-key neither from the MP menu, nor by way of console.

Oh, and the console shows the following error: Menu Error: Expecting type: ITEM_TYPE_LISTBOX

If anyone of you knows how to deal with this, please, your help will be appreciated.
