I will say that the ATI drivers can be unstable and often times can/will lock your pc.
ATI is aware of their regular driver problems and have written a specific tool that can be run when you find your system totally unstable and you need to rollback your drivers, this to me is a sign that they are aware of their drivers (at least in the past) caused havok with a lot of people's systems. ATI Uninstall utilities That being said, I'm a fan of both companies, I have both Nvidia and ATI. If we (as consumers) didn't have both competing against each other we would have much higher prices, less technological breakthroughs and probably lesser quality.

If you don't have competition then there is less to strive for ;) As i said earlier, ATI drivers can be inconsistant, which can be a real pain  It seems to me that ATI don't hold out much hope for all their driver updates. I am not anti ATI, but Nvidia seem to be better with decent driver updates. And at the end of the day t's not just about framerate! |

ATi has been much more consistant with their drivers then nvidia ever has for myself. Nvidias driver releases I dread and am scared about.. ATis I have nothing but performance jump hopes, and now a fix for my CoD.. anyhow.. ATi seems to be more consistant with my hardware. The hardware scene changes monthly and bimonthly, each main driver release jumps these new cards 5-20% im performance. And they seems to unviel new cards every 2 months.. X700 looks good once it ships.. 150 bucks for that perforamnce? hell yeh. If u wanna bring image quality into this.. they are quite equal until u turn on optimizing features on Nvidias.... |

to each his own I guess, I think we can safely agree though that the more manufacturers the better it is for us consumers

FX vs 9xxx ATi takes it But even in the 6 vs X... when you turn on nvidia's optomization feature.. there is (crap i can't spell optimization for shit..) a slight decrease... I'd recommend turning them off. However on ATi its just shader swaps.. so the image quality is dead on.. Damn I wish I could do one of those black/white discrepancy image comparison sheets...but i don't know how |

You may be right in regards to image quality on that level but for me that wouldn't be a 'buy' or 'not buy' type decision. I'd make price, performance and support (drivers) my biggest issues. I think if ATI can improve their drivers further (especially in the OpenGL realm) they will have a heads up on Nvidia but for me, now, ATI is behind Nvidia at this point.
