Easy:

You don't have DirectX9.0c installed. Download from Microsoft.

Or your graphics card is not meet the minimum requirements. Buy a new card.

Or Your graphics card driver is not recognised by the EA 3DSetup Utility, download a new driver, preferrably reference driver, from your hardware manufacturer.

If you know what your card is then you can look on the back of the box for the minimum spec card.

Actually here are the specs,
Win 98,2000/ME/XP, Note no SE Version. :
P3 900 MHz
256 Ram
3.5G of free
8 Speed CD-DVD
32mB T+L Video Card (Tranform & lighting)
DX9
DX9 Sound card (something that will also cause big problems)

These are the bare minimum specs for running this game.

Click on the 'Device Manager' button, there will be a 'Display Adapters' section.

Actually its probably a 22 year old who has just brought a Packard Bell from PCWorld and has absolutely no idea about computers... Same as about 90% of the UK population!
