C.O.D. configurations resetting=unplayable lag!

Basically everytime i click on c.o.d. multiplayer when i get to the splash screen all my settings have been reconfigured to the lowest and whether i reset them back to default or not the lag makes the game unplayable"its like 10fps".
Ive reinstalled the graphics,m.b,sound,modem,etc drivers but to no avail.
Weird enough when i reinstall the game and 1.4 patch everythings peachy and smooth as a dime with settings to high on 1024 768 res but if i disconnect from the internet then connect again then the same thing will happen :bucky!:
Today id had enough so i reinstalled windows"xp pro"my system,cod,and internet connection felt great until guess what?yeh same mother ******* thing again :rant:
When it come's to pc problems if a reinstall of windows doesnt do the trick then im lost! Has anyone any idea whats causing this?ive been playing c.o.d m.p. for months and have not had this problem.
my system specs are amd64 3500+,asus av8 deluxe rev2 mb,1gig corsair xms3200,rad 9800pro cat 4.8 drivers"4.9+4.10 crash my system"and 1 meg broadband which has not long been upgraded from 512k but this shouldnt have anything to do with the problem should it?the only reason i ask is round about the same time as upgrading my connection the problems started to occur plus if i have reinstalled windows what else is left to diagnose? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated...cheers..I also had sp1 dx9.0b with all updates on and today with the fresh install i put sp2 dx9.0c?

10 minutes ago i ran scan disk the computer kept rebooting until finally the scan disk kicked in during which time my hard drive made a screeching nasty mf noise then rebooted and told me to select proper boot device only thing was the bios was no longer detecting it so i think its safe to say my hard drive is f.u.b.a.r'ed but have just turned my computer back on and everything kicked in as normal my question is....i shouldnt be fooled by this should i? in the sense that my hard drive is on its way out isnt it? when i upgraded the first thing i noticed was the drive seemed a lot slower to access windows files and so on which seemed odd since the scale of the upgrade"same hdd" i didnt upgrade the drive i thought it would do for now plus i was spent up my drive is a 80gig maxtor ata133 even if it was working properly would it be/been a significant bottle neck in my system and how much of a noticable gain would i get buying a sata drive mainly gaming performance? cheers.
