Ok comp. wizards! i have question........i'm currently running my dvd rom and my 80 gig hard drive on the same IDE cable. Now would it be better(performance wise) if i had them on thier own separate cables?

Well, there is actually one IDE slot on the MOBO specially for HDD's (the blue one in most cases) and the other one is for the disc drives.
In most cases, this combination should be a bit faster, but maybe you don't feel anything. It is though, much better for compatible reasons.

IDE ports 1 and 2 are not designed for a particular kind of peripheral, They are both exactly the same apart from a colour variation of the plastic male connector, in an effort to stop system builder noobs putting their parallel ATA HDD in the secondary slot and stopping possible conflicts.

Put your CD-ROM/DVD drive on a seperate cable on the secondary slot. Other variations are known to cause problems with 'some' systems where you HDD is running in seperate transfer mode, i.e. ATA100/133 and your CD-ROM/DVD is running in a slower Ultra-DMA 1/2 mode. This will have an effect during large file transfers from CD-HDD aswell.

For whatever reasons, this seems to be more of an issue with VIA chipset setups and older legacy CD-RW drives....
