This is quite easy, follow these steps:

Click [Start], then click [Run...] and type in dxdiag. wait untill the whole thing has loaded up and change to the Sound-Tab.
You'll be able to see it there. Look for the name,

Actually, that's the soundchip on your mainboard which acts as a soundcard.
so, yes, you could say that.

when you ran the sound tests in Dxdiag did it pass? if you go to hardware manager are there any conflists with your sounds device? in the set up for Pinnacle (ive never used it) is there a place to specify the sound device, is it possible that there is some sort of mute option in the program.. i assume normal audio works correctly just not with pinnacle? are all your Motherboard drivers up to date?

youd proabably get better answers if you re run dxdiag and post the results from the save file.

Maybe the proggy that you are trying to run will not run on an Onboard sound chip

Also some proggy's have Digital signal options, if you have checked this box then the sound will only work through a Digital lead. you will need to uncheck to take it back to Analogue
